Zoom to Require Passwords for all Meetings starting June 23

Zoom Logo

As part of an ongoing effort to improve the security of their product, Zoom will begin requiring passwords on June 23.   Zoom passwords should be 6 characters long, all numerals.  There are a few steps you will need to do to get ready for that change.

  • In Zoom: Configure a password for your personal meeting room.  To do this:
  • In Zoom: Update all meetings that you own that have their own Zoom meeting ID to add a password
    • Visit: https://stanford.zoom.us/meeting?type=upcoming
    • Click on the topic of each meeting
    • Click on “edit meeting” on the resulting page
    • Click on “Require meeting password”.  A password will be created, but you’ll be able to edit it if you like
  • In your calendaring application (Outlook, webcal.stanford.edu, etc.): Update all calendar invitations in Office365 to include the new Zoom information.  We recommend that you put the new Zoom link in the “room or location” field of the meeting invite.
    • Get a new link for your Personal Meeting Room:
      • Visit https://stanford.zoom.us/meeting/
      • Select “Personal Meeting Room” from the top navigation bar
      • Copy the meeting link and paste into the “room or location" field of the Outlook meeting invitation. The link will look like: https://stanford.zoom.us/j/[MEETING ID]?pwd=[ENCODED PASSWORD]
      • We recommend that you also include the password in the meeting description so that people who can’t click on the link easily can join your meeting.
    • Get new links for any meetings that have their own Zoom meeting IDs:
      • Visit https://stanford.zoom.us/meeting?type=upcoming
      • Click on the topic for each upcoming meeting
      • For each meeting copy the meeting link and paste into the “room or location" field of the Outlook meeting invitation. The link will look like: https://stanford.zoom.us/j/[MEETING ID]?pwd=[ENCODED PASSWORD]
      • We recommend that you also include the password in the meeting description so that people who can’t click on the link easily can join your meeting.
