Documents Accessibility Remediation Service
The H&S Web Services team offers an accessibility remediation service for electronic documents. The documents can come in a variety of formats: PDF, InDesign, Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides), etc.
You can now send the team your electronic documents; they'll be assessed for accessibility compliance and returned in an accessible format.
The service is open to all H&S units, and generally comes at no cost.
The Process
Reach out to the Web Team
Gather a list of files that you'd like to have assessed. If you're not sure what files are on your site, we will help by performing an inventory.
Set scope, timeline, and priorities
We will discuss the scope of work, including relative priority of the documents and turnaround time.
Discuss possible alternative formats
Not every PDF should remain a PDF. Together we will consider possible alternatives. For example:
- Can any of the files be retired?
- Can the information be presented as a web page instead, making it more accessible as well as easier to find for users and search engines?
- Would some type of form (e.g. Google Forms or SmartSheet) make sense for the content?
Our team will work on your files
We may have questions along the way, so please keep an eye out for status updates from us.
Receive files back in an accessible format
We will send your accessible files back to you in batches, and/or offer to replace the existing files on your website.
Prioritization
For now, the service is focused on priority files
Higher priority documents are those that are:
- Education-oriented
- Student-facing
- High-traffic
- Templates
- Recent
- Core to the mission of the university
